There is a place in Costa Rica that has for the most part remained natural and somewhat frozen in time named Matapalo. Located nearly at the tip of the Osa Peninsula this secluded point offers the beauty of the Central Pacific Coast without the crowds of other popular tourist destinations on the Pacific Coast. Drive 230 km south of Quepos to reach this pristine location with palm lined beaches, once you arrive here you will feel like you are on the edge of the planet itself. You will be the minority here surrounded by monkeys, birds and a diversity of wildlife like no other place on earth.
There is not much of a town and don’t expect too much but a few options for dining and accommodations, if you are looking for tranquility you have reached the right place. It’s impossible not to soak up the laidback atmosphere when relaxing with nothing but the sounds of the waves crashing in and the wildlife in the background. Matapalo is nearly the end of the road on the Osa Peninsula in fact you can only drive another 25 km. The next closest town with more action is Puerto Jimenez, only 17km away but the rough dirt road will take nearly an hour to drive.
Besides relaxing and reading a book some activities to enjoy are horseback riding, guided nature tours, surfing/boogy boarding and there is a zip line tour close to Puerto Jimenez.
