Mal Pais is known as a small surfer and party town beautifully situated on the Pacific coastline. This is the perfect place for younger singles or young couples to vacation enjoying the peace and quiet but also unwind at night with a little party time. Although Mal Pais is very tranquil you can still find just the perfect amount of party at night. If you are a surfer then this is a must go to location in Costa Rica with several surf breaks in the area. The dirt roads are a little rough coming in to the location and be prepared to cross through a few rivers but once you arrive it is well worth the travels.
The town is very similar to Puerto Viejo minus the Caribbean Ocean. Other towns worth checking out in the proximity of Mal Pais are Montezuma and Santa Teresa. Because of the somewhat desolate location the beaches in the area are sprawling and not so crowded compared to other more visited places making this the perfect place to sit back, relax and read a book.
The coast line is mostly rocky and you will find some peculiar volcanic formations that will leave your imagination roaming. Thick lush jungle forests line the white sand beaches giving a cooler escape in the shade from the sun that beats down on the beaches.
There are only a handful of hotel and hostels but you will have no problem finding accommodations to suit your needs and the food is very good. Tours such as horseback riding, snorkelling, bike riding, hiking, canopy and ATV adventures can be arranged at your hotel or at a tour office. Mal Pais is also a great location to catch some wildlife such as monkeys and this is a bird watches dreamland. Mal Pais directly borders the Cabo Blanco Nature reserve, find the entrance for the park near the village of Cabuya.
